Amazon Business Puts Its Own Trucks on Loading Docks in 13 States

Palletised delivery to a dock is not parcel work — and the company doing half a billion B2B deliveries a year has now built vehicles for it.

Amazon Business has rolled out dedicated, branded delivery trucks across 13 states, built for consolidated drop-offs and palletised delivery at loading docks. The states are Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah and Wisconsin.

Daniel Silverfield, head of value and selection at Amazon Business, framed the launch to Supply Chain Dive as a distinction between two different problems: a front porch and a loading dock, he said, are not the same delivery.

That distinction is the whole story. Everything Amazon built for a decade optimised for the porch.

What changes operationally

Consumer delivery optimises for stop density — many small drops, short dwell, no appointment, no equipment at the receiving end. Dock delivery inverts every one of those. Fewer stops, longer dwell, receiving hours, appointment scheduling, pallet jacks, a signature from someone with authority to accept.

A van built for porches can physically make a dock delivery. It does it badly and expensively, because the parcels arrive loose and someone has to break and rebuild the order at the point of receipt.

Consolidating a business customer's orders onto pallets in the fulfilment centre and delivering them to a dock is, in structural terms, LTL — with the difference that Amazon already holds the inventory and controls the fulfilment node.

The scale behind it is not small. Amazon Business made half a billion deliveries last year through the same fulfilment network that serves the consumer business — more than 200 US centres running sortable and non-sortable fulfilment, sortation, receive centres and delivery stations. Amazon moved from a national to a regional fulfilment model in 2023 to cut cost and shorten distances, and has continued adding automated capacity, including a 248,687-square-foot robotics-equipped sorting warehouse planned in Georgetown, Texas.

The pattern this belongs to

Read alongside Amazon Air Cargo selling lift to third-party forwarders, and the consolidation of Amazon's air, surface and sortation operations under a single executive this month, the direction is consistent. Capability built for Amazon's own volume gets productised and sold once it has scale.

Branded trucks are the visible end of that. A vehicle in Amazon Business livery pulling up to a customer's dock is a claim on a relationship that used to belong to a carrier or a broker.

What it means for forwarders

This competes with LTL and with regional final-mile, not with parcel. Palletised dock delivery is the same product an LTL carrier sells, with a shorter first mile because the goods start in a fulfilment centre near the customer. If you arrange B2B replenishment into offices, clinics, schools or job sites in those 13 states, this is a new bidder — and one that does not need the linehaul.

The thirteen states are the tell. They are the dense fulfilment markets, not a national footprint. This will follow fulfilment-centre density rather than geography, so the question for any given lane is whether Amazon has a regional node near the receiver, not whether it serves the state.

The defensible ground is what Amazon does not hold. Amazon can only consolidate the pallet if the inventory is already in its network. Multi-vendor consolidation, imported goods, customer-owned stock, anything needing customs work or a bonded step — those remain outside the model. That is where the value is, and it is worth being explicit about it in front of customers who are being pitched.

Watch whether it opens to third-party freight. Right now this moves Amazon Business orders. Amazon Air Cargo followed exactly this arc — internal utility first, external product once the network had slack. If dock delivery is ever offered for goods Amazon did not sell, the competitive picture changes considerably.
