Google Maps Platform Rolls Out Truck-Aware Routing Across Its Full API Stack
Large Vehicle Routing brings height, weight and axle-count restrictions into Google's core routing engine — but it's a developer tool, not a standalone app.
Google Maps Platform made Large Vehicle Routing generally available the week of Aug. 19 across its three commercial routing products — the Routes API, the Route Optimization API and the Navigation SDK — according to the official Google Maps Platform blog post announcing the launch, written by product manager Mohit Moondra. The feature is live now in the U.S.
Large Vehicle Routing lets developers building fleet software feed in a vehicle's height, weight, length, width, axle count and hazardous-materials classification, and get back routes that account for low bridges, weight-restricted roads and tight turns rather than the car-optimized paths Google's consumer routing has always produced. Moondra's post frames the gap it's closing directly: "Traditional routing algorithms are optimized for standard cars and typically do not account for factors affecting large fleets," leaving fleets to rely on manual checks or third-party truck-routing tools layered on top of consumer maps.
What's actually new
Three pieces of the stack move together:
- The Routes API and Route Optimization API now compute truck-legal routes and multi-stop, multi-vehicle plans against the submitted vehicle profile, rather than defaulting to standard-car paths and leaving compliance checking to the fleet.
- Large-vehicle-specific ETA modeling combines observed truck travel speeds with real-time and predictive traffic data — a separate calculation from Google's car ETAs, which historically ran optimistic for anything hauling freight.
- The Navigation SDK carries a route token from dispatch through to the driver's in-cab display, so the same restriction-aware route dispatch planned is the one the driver actually sees, with visual callouts for height and weight limits along the way.
Coverage from Commercial Carrier Journal confirms the general-availability timing and features but notes Google has not published pricing or named which fleet management or TMS platforms are integrating the capability first — the launch is a platform release aimed at developers, not an announcement of specific customer deployments.
What it doesn't do
This is not a consumer app update. Individual drivers won't get Large Vehicle Routing by opening Google Maps on a phone; it reaches trucks only when a fleet's TMS, ELD or navigation vendor builds it into their product using Google's APIs. That puts the near-term impact on software vendors and the fleets that pay for integrated platforms, not on independent owner-operators using free consumer tools — the segment that dedicated truck-routing apps like PC Miler and Trucker Path have historically served.
What it means for freight buyers and 3PLs
- Vendor pressure, not immediate routing change. Fleets don't get truck-aware routing until their TMS or navigation vendor ships it. Expect FreightTech platforms already built on Google's mapping stack to move first; expect competitive pressure on PC Miler, Trucker Path and similar dedicated truck-routing incumbents to either match the feature set or defend on data depth and driver-specific tooling they've built over years.
- No pricing disclosed yet. Google hasn't published what Large Vehicle Routing costs on top of standard API usage. That's the number that will determine whether smaller carriers' software vendors pass this through or hold back.
- Consistency between dispatch and cab is the real product. The route-token handoff from the Routes/Route Optimization APIs into the Navigation SDK is arguably more consequential than the routing accuracy itself — it closes a gap where dispatch-planned routes and driver-followed routes have historically diverged.
