Long Beach clears 1.02 million TEU in July as dwell creeps past four days

A record month for the port, and the chassis pool is the constraint everyone on the dock names first.

LONG BEACH, CALIF. — The Port of Long Beach moved 1.02 million TEU in July, its strongest month on record and 6.8% ahead of the same month last year.

Average import dwell finished the month at 4.1 days, up from 3.4 in June. Terminal operators point at the chassis pool rather than the berth: availability at the two largest providers fell below 6% on eleven working days in July.

The port's own figures put rail dwell at 8.2 days, which is the number that shows up two weeks later as an IPI transit complaint in Chicago.
